Privacy Policy

Effective Date: 2022-10-03 · Last updated: 2026-06-24

The Budgeting Company Limited built The Budgeting App as a freemium app. This Service is provided by The Budgeting Company Limited at no cost and is intended for use as is.

This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share your personal information when you use our Service. By using the app, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

We will never sell, rent, or distribute your personal information to any third parties not mentioned in this Privacy Policy.

You may delete all of your personal data at any time, either through the in‑app "Delete Account" feature or by submitting a delete account request to us.

The terms in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms and Conditions unless otherwise defined here.

1. Information We Collect and Use

To use the app, the only personally identifiable information we require is your email address. This is used to operate and improve the Service and is retained as described in this policy.

If you contact us for support or send us feedback (for example, by email or in a review), we also receive and keep whatever you choose to include in those communications. We use this to help with your request, to improve the app, and to handle similar support requests in future.

The app also uses third-party services that may collect information used to identify you. These include:

2. Bank Syncing

The Budgeting App offers an optional bank syncing feature that allows you to connect your bank accounts so that your transaction and balance data can be imported into the app automatically. When you use bank syncing, you will be asked to give your consent before any data is collected. You can revoke this consent at any time through the app, and no further data will be collected once consent is revoked.

The banking data we receive through this feature may include:

  • Account names and balances
  • Transaction details (amounts, dates, descriptions, and categories)

This data is used solely to provide you with budgeting and financial tracking features within the app.

The provider we use to connect to your bank depends on your region. The sections below describe how bank syncing works in each supported region.

Australia

In Australia, we provide bank syncing as a CDR Representative of Fiskil Pty Ltd (ABN 89 646 260 728), an accredited data recipient under Australia's Consumer Data Right (CDR) framework. This means Fiskil collects and discloses your banking data on our behalf, using its platform, in accordance with the CDR Rules.

Your banking data is not shared with any third parties beyond Fiskil as described above. When your consent is revoked or expires, your banking data will be handled in accordance with the CDR Rules.

For more information about how Fiskil handles your data, please refer to Fiskil's Privacy Policy.

Canada and the United States

In Canada and the United States, bank syncing is provided through Plaid Inc., a financial data network that securely connects to your bank on our behalf. When you connect an account, Plaid collects your banking data from your financial institution and shares it with us so that we can provide budgeting and financial tracking features within the app.

Your banking data is not shared with any third parties beyond Plaid as described above. When your consent is revoked or expires, no further data will be collected, and your banking data will be handled in accordance with Plaid's policies and applicable law.

For more information about how Plaid handles your data, please refer to Plaid's Privacy Policy.

3. Log Data

If the app experiences an error, we may collect data (through third‑party tools) known as Log Data. This may include your device's IP address, device name, operating system version, app configuration, time and date of use, and other statistics.

4. Error Monitoring and Diagnostics

We use third‑party tools to help us monitor, identify, and fix errors or warnings in the app. These tools may receive limited information related to your account if it is necessary to investigate and resolve an issue.

We only share the minimum amount of data required for error detection and resolution. While we never share your personally identifiable information (such as your email address) with these third parties, certain non‑identifiable account‑related identifiers may be shared. These identifiers cannot be used by the third parties to access or obtain your personal information.

All third‑party error monitoring providers are bound by their own privacy and security obligations and cannot use the information for any purpose other than assisting us in diagnosing and fixing issues with the app.

5. Use of Artificial Intelligence

We use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help us provide customer support and to improve the app. Our AI provider is Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant. We use AI in two ways:

  • Helping with support. When you contact us for help, we may use AI to investigate and resolve your issue more quickly. We also learn from past support conversations and feedback so that the AI can handle similar requests better over time.
  • Improving the app. We may use AI to help us understand how the app is used, and to learn from the feedback you give us (such as reviews and support messages), so that we can fix issues and build better features.

Using AI to do this does not mean handing over your data. We've deliberately set it up so that:

  • The AI is never given access to your banking data. Logging in to your bank is handled securely by our bank‑syncing providers, so we never hold your bank login details. Your raw banking data is never copied, stored, or shared in its original form; we only ever work with the minimal transaction information we derive from it.
  • When we analyse how the app is used, the information involved is limited to events such as which screens or features are opened. It does not include anything you enter into the app, or any financial data synced from your bank, and it is linked to an internal account identifier, not to your email address.
  • Before any past support conversation or feedback is reused to help with other people's requests, we remove details that could identify you, so that one customer's information is never exposed to another.
  • We share only the minimum information needed for the task at hand. For a support request, this may include information tied to your account so that we can resolve your issue.
  • Anthropic handles any information it receives in accordance with its own privacy policy and security practices.

Using AI does not change your rights over your data. You can still delete all of your personal data at any time, as described in the Data Deletion section below.

6. Cookies

While we do not explicitly use cookies, the app may use third‑party code or libraries that use cookies to improve their services. You can choose to accept or refuse cookies. Refusing cookies may limit some features of the Service.

7. Data Deletion

You can delete all of your personal data at any time by:

Once your request is processed, all associated personal data will be permanently removed from our systems, except where retention is required by law. We may also retain a record of any support correspondence and feedback you have sent us for legal, dispute‑resolution, and record‑keeping purposes. Where we reuse this correspondence or feedback to improve our support, we first remove details that could identify you.

If you have used the bank syncing feature, you can revoke your consent at any time through the app. For Australian users, when consent is revoked or expires, your banking data will be handled in accordance with the Consumer Data Right Rules, and Fiskil will be notified so that your data is also removed from their systems.

8. Data Security

We take the security of your data seriously. All personal data is:

  • Encrypted in transit when sent between your device and our servers using secure protocols (such as HTTPS/TLS).
  • Encrypted at rest when stored on our servers, ensuring it remains protected even if storage systems are accessed without authorisation.

While we use industry‑standard measures to protect your data, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Links to Other Sites

The app may contain links to external sites we do not operate. We are not responsible for their content, policies, or practices, and encourage you to review their privacy policies.

10. Children's Privacy

The Service is not intended for anyone under 13 years old. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we discover that such data has been provided, we will delete it immediately. Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided personal information should contact us.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted within the app or on our website. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
